What do Kumon and Mathnasium cost, and what do you get for it?

Short answer. Kumon costs about $150 to $230 a month for one subject. Mathnasium costs about $430 to $560 a month for two visits a week. Each center sets its own price, so yours may differ. Neither has strong published evidence of results: Kumon has one study, and Mathnasium has none you can read.
The three options at a glance
Kumon: $150 to $230 a month, per subject
- How it works: worksheets every day, about 30 minutes, and two visits a week at the center.
- Results: one UK study found a small edge over similar children. It did not prove Kumon caused it.
Mathnasium: $430 to $560 a month, two visits a week
- How it works: an instructor teaches at the table, about one hour per visit.
- Results: Mathnasium cites studies of its own results, but does not publish them.
Level Up: $49 a month, at home
- How it works: an assessment finds the missing skills, then about 30 minutes of practice a day, five days a week.
- Results: children master about 30 missing skills a month, 3 to 5 times faster than in a tutoring session. A sample student gained 18 percentile points on MAP math after six weeks of summer practice.
What a month costs

Both centers add a one-time fee when you join, up to about $200. A child doing Kumon math and reading pays for two subjects.
What results each one can show
Kumon: one study, and a small edge
In 2020 the UK's Education Policy Institute compared 310 Kumon pupils with similar pupils on England's national math test at age 11. The Kumon pupils scored about 2 points higher, which the researchers put at about 7 months of extra progress. They also said the study cannot prove Kumon caused it, and that many of these pupils were already high achievers.
Mathnasium: claims you cannot check
Mathnasium says studies by Watson Education show better scores on school math tests within 20 sessions. It does not publish those studies, so we could not read how they were done.
Level Up: about 30 missing skills mastered a month
At 30 minutes a day, five days a week, children master about 30 skills they were missing, every month. A skill that started as a gap takes under 20 minutes of practice on average. A tutoring session runs 60 to 90 minutes, so Level Up is 3 to 5 times faster. See how we measured it.
About 10 hours of practice a month ÷ about 19 minutes per skill = about 30 skills.
Level Up: a sample student, +18 percentile points
A sample student practiced about 15 hours over six weeks one summer. The MAP math score went from the 69th percentile in spring to the 87th in fall. One student is an example, not a promise, and results can vary. Read the full case study.
Before you sign up at a center
- Notice to cancel: usually about a month, in writing.
- Deposits: some Kumon centers keep the deposit if you leave in the first year.
- Missed sessions: usually not refunded.
Which fits your child?
- Kumon fits a child who can work alone and likes routine, and families who also want reading.
- Mathnasium fits a child who needs a person to explain things, if you can drive to a center twice a week.
- Level Up fits a child with gaps from earlier grades who can practice at home on a computer or tablet. Children master about 30 missing skills a month, and most children we assess can close their gaps from earlier grades within 6 months. The first 7 days are free: your child takes the assessment, you get the report, and practice starts right away, so you can both see how it fits.
