5th grade math test: a free 10-question quick check

This free math test for 5th graders has ten questions from across the year. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It is a quick check, not a full assessment.

In this quick check, every child gets the same ten questions, which represent a selection of the most relevant ones for 5th grade. Unlike the full Level Up assessment, this check does not adapt to a child’s answers. The result shows which questions your child missed, but it cannot identify foundational knowledge gaps. For the full picture, the Level Up assessment adapts to each answer and finds the earliest skill that is missing. It is included in the free trial.

What the questions cover

The ten questions sample 5th grade: place value and powers of 10, adding mixed numbers and estimating with fractions, writing expressions and using parentheses, converting units, a line plot with fractions and the coordinate grid. Several ask your child to check someone else’s work, and two ask your child to type an answer.

The whole year covers these areas:

Every topic of the year, explained for parents, is on the 5th grade math page.

What you see at the end

The score, then every question with your child’s answer, the correct answer and a worked solution. A short message explains what a similar score usually means for 5th graders on our full assessment. Treat it as an indication: ten fixed questions cannot measure where a child stands.

Common questions

What math should a 5th grader know?

By the end of 5th grade: adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators; multiplying fractions and dividing with unit fractions; decimals to thousandths and all four operations with decimals to hundredths; multi-digit multiplication and long division with two-digit divisors; and the volume of a box. The 5th grade math page explains each topic for parents.

Is this 5th grade math test the same for every child?

Yes. Every child gets the same ten questions, whatever the earlier answers were. That keeps it short, but it can show only which questions were missed, not the reason behind each miss.

Can I print the 5th grade math test?

Yes. The same ten questions come as a PDF, with a separate answer key that has the worked solutions.

What if my child misses the fraction questions?

Check equivalent fractions first. Adding 2/3 and 1/4 means rewriting both as twelfths, and that skill comes from 4th grade. The one-minute check on the 5th grade math page tests it with a single question.
